What is Pre-K, and is it Different Than Preschool?
Pre-k is short for pre-kindergarten, a specialized program designed to prepare children for their first year of school. There’s no difference between pre-k and preschool, really. Pre-k schools are just a form of preschool, and one is not necessarily better than the other. They are both designed to provide educational spaces for children where they can begin to develop their social, physical, and cognitive skills in a safe and structured environment. However, pre-k is more narrowly targeted when it comes to ages served
What Age is Pre-K?
If there is a difference between preschool and Pre-K, it’s the ages of our students. Pre-k generally serves children between 4 and 5 years old, preparing them to enter a kindergarten program in the following year. The focus is more narrowed to school readiness, so the program standards are more academic in nature.
Is Pre-K Mandatory in Nebraska?
In our state, it’s not mandatory that children enroll in public schools until the age of 6. However, when a child turns six, state law then requires they enroll in public schools no matter their preparedness. While pre-kindergarten education is not mandatory in Nebraska, it’s become a customary step in getting your child ready for the classroom. Preschool and Pre-k programs prepare children for the social and physical requirements of their first year of school. Not only that, some Nebraska school boards require kindergarten readiness exams before enrollment in their programs. Pre-k is an excellent opportunity for your child to learn the material and skills that will further their success in kindergarten programs.
How Pre-K Prepares Children For Success
Between the ages of 4 and 5, your child is rapidly growing and conquering the stages of early childhood development. They’re fascinated with new ideas, have seemingly endless energy to run and play, and are beginning to understand the meaning of friendship. Pre-k programs provide a space for your child to explore their new skills and strengths, all while developing important cognitive, physical, and social abilities that will prepare them for grade school. Whether it’s educational games that help your child learn colors, numbers, or sharing, our pre-k program’s success is rooted in our dedication to fun.
Purposeful Pre-K Programs: Learning Through Play!
Getting your child prepared for school is as simple as helping them learn through playing! A life of fun and learning is our Pre-K goal. Your children deserve the best education available, and in the stages of early childhood, the best education shouldn’t always feel like education. At Apple Tree Orchard, our Pre-K helps prepare them for the new challenges they will face when they enroll in school. We use play to help your child develop her or his independence and prepare for the important move to kindergarten. All this happens in a fun, safe and organized environment.
We implement preschool age-appropriate educational games into our curriculum to help set the tone for your child’s experience with learning. Preschool curriculum involves lots of colors, shapes, letters, and numbers, but it can also teach social skills like sharing and listening. Not only do preschool games prepare children for grade school, but they also create a fun learning environment for your child to grow in!
Our passionate and engaging staff love kids and love watching them learn and guiding them to the best opportunities for it. We partner with you during these special Pre-K years to get to know your child and make it the most fun possible, for you and them. Rest assured that our Pre-K students receive the care they deserve.
